Hurricane Preparation Guide – Space Coast, Florida
Indialantic • Indian Harbour Beach • Melbourne • Cocoa Beach & Surrounding area.
Being prepared before a storm is one of the smartest things you can do. Once a hurricane is approaching, stores empty quickly, gas lines get long, and supplies become limited. Planning ahead helps you stay safe and stress-free.
PRE-STORM HOME PREP
• Bring in or secure all outdoor furniture, decor, and loose yard items
• Secure or store gas grills safely to prevent propane hazards
• Consider hurricane shutters or plywood for windows
• Use sandbags to help protect doorways and low entry points
• Trim trees and remove weak or dead branches ahead of time
WATER & FOOD SUPPLIES
• At least 1 gallon of water per person, per day (7+ days recommended)
• Fill tubs or large containers for non-drinking water use
• Stock non-perishable foods (canned goods, protein bars, dry snacks)
• Don’t forget pets—food, water, and essentials for fur family members 🐾
POWER & LIGHTING
• Flashlights + extra batteries
• Portable power banks / charging stations
• Fully charged devices before the storm
• Generator (if available) — always operate outdoors safely
SAFETY & EMERGENCY KIT
• First aid kit + essential medications
• Wet wipes, sanitation supplies, paper goods
• Trash bags, duct tape, basic tools
• Waterproof bag with important documents
• Extra clothing and personal necessities in a grab-and-go bag
ADDITIONAL ESSENTIALS
• Candles (use safely—never unattended)
• Books or activities for downtime
• Chainsaw (for post-storm cleanup if trained to use it)
HAVE A PLAN
• Know your evacuation route and nearest shelter
• Review your family communication plan
• Set a meeting point if separated

AFTER THE STORM
• Avoid standing water—it may be electrically charged
• Watch for downed power lines and debris
• Drive cautiously—signals and roads may be impacted
• Wear protective footwear if flooding occurs
Bottom Line:
Preparation is everything during hurricane season. The earlier you plan, the safer and calmer you’ll be when storms approach.
Stay safe, Space Coast.
